Female image -- outward physical appearance -- plays an enormous role in contemporary culture -- one obsessed with youth, beauty, and celebrity. A culture that objectifies women and uses sex to sell products
Advertising is pervasive and shapes our notions of female beauty. The idealized female image is mostly focused on weight -- Barbie doll proportions, which if a real woman had her head would be too big to hold up and she’d have only room for ½ a liver. Most women face unattainable goal and an men are set up for expectations that reality may pale by comparison.
Over many years, as I began to see that the ideal image shown in fashion magazines was a source of frustration and feelings of inadequacy for women, the subject of female image is one that I have repeatedly revisited.
