Jump Rope Girls
The photo essay "Jump Rope Girls" follows up on a 1988 New York Times story I photographed about a group of young girls living in a rough Brooklyn neighborhood. A generation later I collaborated with the reporter, documenting 2 of the girls’ lives as adults with children of their own, juggling parenting with giving shelter to and caring for extended family. Over a three year period I photographed them in their homes and at work, and their neighborhoods. I presented the project at Duke University’s Documentary Study Center and at the Brooklyn Public Library.
